Objectives

Students will be able to

  • identify and prove algebraically whether a given identity is true or false,
  • prove algebraically whether statements are true or false, for example, whether the sum of two consecutive numbers is always odd,
  • recognize errors in algebraic proof.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • simplifying algebraic expressions,
  • expanding algebraic expressions,
  • factoring expressions.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • proof by induction or proof by contradiction.
