Lesson Plan: Proving Polynomial Identities Mathematics
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to prove statements algebraically.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- understand the concept of an identity,
- identify and prove algebraically whether a given identity is true or false,
- prove algebraically whether statements are true or false, for example, whether the sum of two consecutive numbers is always odd,
- recognize errors in algebraic proof.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- simplifying algebraic expressions,
- expanding algebraic expressions,
- factoring expressions.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- proof by induction or proof by contradiction.
