Lesson Plan: Animal and Plant Cells Biology

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to recall the main subcellular structures of animal and plant cells and describe their functions.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • recall that plants and animals are multicellular organisms,
  • state that the following organelles and subcellular structures are found in a typical animal cell: the nucleus, mitochondria, cell membrane, ribosomes, and cytoplasm,
  • state that a typical plant cell will contain most of the organelles and subcellular structures found in animal cells as well as chloroplasts, a cell wall, and a large permanent vacuole,
  • identify the major organelles of plant and animal cells on simple diagrams and micrographs,
  • describe the role of each of the organelles listed.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • the fact that animals and plants are living organisms.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • organelles and subcellular structures such as the Golgi apparatus, the smooth and rough endoplasmic reticulum, the cytoskeleton, and the nucleolus.
