Lesson Plan: The Heart: Location and Function

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to describe the job, properties, and location of the heart.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • describe the role of the heart,
  • describe the role of blood,
  • identify and describe the location of the heart,
  • identify that the heart is a muscle,
  • explain that the heart’s pumping is automatic,
  • explain what happens when the heart expands and contracts,
  • describe how we can listen to someone’s heart beating.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • organs as parts of the body with specific functions,
  • naming some body organs such as lungs and ribs,
  • defining the term muscle.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • how the circulatory system works as a whole,
  • the terms circulatory system or circulation,
  • details of the flow of blood around the body,
  • the composition of blood,
  • how to measure heart rate,
  • the structure of the heart, including the chambers.
