Lesson Plan: Formula Mass Chemistry • First Year of Secondary School

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to define formula mass and calculate its value for given molecular formulas using atomic masses.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • recall the definition of atomic mass and the atomic mass unit,
  • recall how to identify the atomic mass from the periodic table,
  • define formula mass and its calculation from atomic masses,
  • state the different definitions of atomic mass, formula mass, and molecular mass,
  • use atomic masses to calculate the formula mass of a compound,
  • calculate formula masses from molecular and structural formulas.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • chemical formulas,
  • atomic masses,
  • the periodic table.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • conservation of mass,
  • isotopes.
