Lesson Plan: Choosing Equilibrium Conditions Chemistry
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to predict the effect of changing the temperature, concentration, or pressure on the yield of industrial reactions and its financial consequences.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- evaluate combined changes in concentration, pressure, and/or temperature on the position of an equilibrium,
- explain how decisions regarding reaction conditions relate to fixed and long-term costs and yield,
- apply knowledge of equilibria to suggest conditions for common industrial processes.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- Le Chatelier’s principle,
- basic industrial processes.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- equilibrium calculations,
- Gibbs free energy,
- use of square brackets to indicate the concentration.
