Lesson Plan: Subtracting Equal Groups Mathematics

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to use subtraction to find the number of equal groups when dividing.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • understand the relationship between repeated subtraction and dividing a whole into groups of a given size,
  • use repeated subtraction along a number line to find the number of equal groups,
  • solve division-based word problems by using repeated subtraction.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • dividing by making equal groups of a given number,
  • subtracting single-digit numbers (including using a number line to record this),
  • counting in 2s (to 20), 5s (to 50), and 10s (to 100).

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • using arrays to identify equal groups of objects,
  • using or recognizing the ÷ symbol or the long division symbol,
  • applying multiplication facts,
  • reading or writing division expressions or equations.
