Lesson Plan: Separating Mixtures
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to describe ways of separating different types of mixtures.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- describe ways of separating a liquid–liquid mixture,
- describe ways of separating a solid–liquid mixture,
- describe ways of separating a solid–solid mixture.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- physical and chemical changes,
- states of matter,
- the different types of mixtures, such as salt–water, sugar–water, sand–water, and water–oil mixtures,
- the differences between mixtures and pure substances.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- specifics of mixtures, such as being homogeneous, heterogeneous, a suspension, or a colloid,
- solutions,
- chemical reactions.
