Lesson Plan: Equation of a Parabola
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to write the equation of a parabola using different givens, analyze its properties, and solve real-life problems.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- understand the definition of a parabola in terms of focus and directrix,
- identify the focus, directrix, and vertex of a parabola given in standard or general forms,
- write down the equation of a parabola given its focus and directrix,
- interpret the focus, directrix, vertex, and axis of symmetry of a parabola graphically.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- general and standard forms of an equation of a conic section.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- ellipses and hyperbolas in terms of foci and directrices.
