Lesson Plan: Interpreting Relationships by Drawing Straight Lines Mathematics • 5th Grade

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to draw straight-line graphs and interpret the relationships shown.

Students will be able to

  • plot ordered pairs and draw a straight-line graph,
  • use a graph to answer questions about unknown quantities,
  • identify rules that relate variables,
  • use rules to calculate missing values.

Students should already be familiar with

  • reading and recording coordinates as ordered pairs,
  • plotting coordinates.

Students will not cover

  • negative numbers,
  • equations of lines,
  • slopes, gradients, intercepts, and variables,
  • proportional or linear relationships.
