Lesson Plan: Properties and Uses of Magnets
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to describe the properties of magnets, the poles of a magnet, and the magnetic field and how to make a compass.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- predict whether two magnets will attract or repel each other, depending on which poles are facing each other,
- recognize the north-south direction by using a freely moving magnet,
- describe a magnetic field,
- describe common uses of magnets,
- describe what a compass is made from and what it is used for.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- magnetism,
- natural and artificial magnets.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- electromagnets.
