Lesson Plan: Parallelograms Mathematics
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to define and identify parallelograms and relate them to squares, rectangles, and rhombuses.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- define the term parallelogram,
- list the attributes of parallelograms,
- identify parallelograms,
- identify figures that are not parallelograms,
- recognize that squares, rectangles, and rhombuses are all types of parallelograms.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- the concept of a polygon,
- the attributes and definitions of squares, rectangles, and rhombuses,
- parallel lines.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- formal hierarchies of shapes,
- angle measurements other than that of right angles,
- the notation of angle measurements other than that of right angles,
- geometric notation such as parallel line markings,
- the congruence of shapes, lines, or angles.
