Lesson Plan: Adding and Subtracting Numbers up to 1,000 Using Compensation
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to add and subtract two numbers by breaking them apart and combining them to give us numbers that are easier to add or subtract.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- use compensation when adding two numbers with up to three digits,
- use compensation when subtracting two numbers with up to three digits,
- add and subtract two numbers with up to three digits by finding an easier equivalent problem,
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- place value up to 1,000.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- the column method for addition and subtraction.
