Lesson Plan: Estimating Quotients: Three-Digit Divisors

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to use rounding and compatible numbers to estimate the quotient when the divisor is a three-digit number.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • use rounding to estimate the quotient when the divisor is a three-digit number,
  • use compatible numbers to estimate the quotient when the divisor is a three-digit number,
  • tell whether a quotient is reasonable by estimating it,
  • apply estimation skills when solving word problems using division.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • dividing multi digit numbers by three-digit divisors,
  • rounding numbers with up to five digits to the nearest place value.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • calculations where the dividend has more than five digits,
  • calculations where the divisor has more than three digits.
