Lesson Plan: Normal Reaction Force on a Sloping Surface Physics
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to analyze weight, friction, and normal reaction forces contributing to the motion of objects on sloped surfaces.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- calculate the component of the reaction force on an object on a sloping surface that acts vertically,
- calculate the component of the reaction force on an object on a smooth sloping surface that acts horizontally,
- determine the resultant force on an object on a rough sloping surface acting parallel to the surface.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- Newton’s second law of motion,
- Newton’s third law of motion,
- how to find the components of a vector,
- how to find the resultant of multiple vectors,
- the meaning of the center of mass,
- how to determine static and kinetic friction forces on an object as a result of its contact with a surface.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- curved surfaces,
- calculation of the rotation of an object.
