Lesson Plan: Factors Affecting Rate Chemistry • 7th Grade
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to predict and explain the effects of changing concentration, pressure, and surface area on the rate of reaction using the collision theory.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- explain, using the collision theory, the effects of changing conditions of concentration, pressure, and surface area on the rate of a reaction,
- identify methods to increase or decrease concentration, pressure, and surface area,
- compare the results of surface area and volume calculations,
- list situations where altering concentration, pressure, and/or surface area may be dangerous.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- the kinetic model of matter,
- the collision theory and the effect of heat on the rate of reaction.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- the Boltzmann distribution,
- quantitative measurements of rate or rate equations,
- relationships between pressure and temperature.
