Lesson Plan: Sum of an Infinite Geometric Sequence Mathematics • Second Year of Secondary School

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to calculate the sum of an infinite geometric sequence.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • understand when a geometric series is convergent and, thus, has a finite sum (i.e., when 1<𝑟<1),
  • find the sum of a convergent infinite geometric sequence using the formula 𝑆=𝑎1𝑟, given sufficient information about the sequence,
  • convert recurring decimals to fractions by finding the sum of a geometric sequence.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • the sum of a finite geometric sequence.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • sigma notation,
  • converting decimals algebraically.
