Lesson Plan: Evaporation and Condensation

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to describe the changes that occur when phase changes between liquid and gas occur below boiling temperatures.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • define vapor as liquid droplets suspended in a gas,
  • describe qualitatively how evaporation of a liquid can produce vapor at temperatures below the boiling point of the liquid,
  • describe qualitatively how condensation of a gas can produce vapor at temperatures above the boiling point of the gas,
  • describe qualitatively how the pressure of a gas affects the condensation of the gas to produce vapor,
  • describe qualitatively how the pressure of a gas in contact with a liquid affects the evaporation of the liquid to produce vapor,
  • relate humidity of a gas to the concentration of water vapor in the gas.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • qualitative descriptions of distributions of particle speeds in an ideal gas,
  • qualitative descriptions of particle interactions in liquids and gases.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • calculation of humidity,
  • calculation of vapor pressure.
