Lesson Plan: Charging and Discharging Circuits with Multiple Capacitors Physics

This lesson plan includes the objectives and prerequisites of the lesson teaching students how to determine the charges and voltages of capacitors in multicapacitor circuits when they charge and discharge.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • combine the equations for individual capacitor characteristics, characteristics of capacitor combinations, and the charging and discharging characteristics of individual and combined capacitors to determine instantaneous values of potential difference across specific capacitors in capacitor combination circuits when charging and discharging of capacitors occurs,
  • combine the equations for individual capacitor characteristics, characteristics of capacitor combinations, and the charging and discharging characteristics of individual and combined capacitors to determine instantaneous values of charge stored by specific capacitors in capacitor combination circuits when charging and discharging of capacitors occurs,
  • combine the equations for individual capacitor characteristics, characteristics of capacitor combinations, and the charging and discharging characteristics of individual and combined capacitors to determine instantaneous values of current in branches of these circuits during charging and discharging.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • the equation 𝐶=𝑄𝑉,
  • the equation 𝑄=𝐼𝑡,
  • the equation 𝑉=𝐼𝑅,
  • calculating the resultant capacitance of capacitors in series and in parallel,
  • calculating the resultant resistance of resistors in series and in parallel,
  • the equation 𝑉=𝑉𝑒 for capacitor charging,
  • the equation 𝑉=𝑉1𝑒 for capacitor discharging.
