Lesson Plan: Genetics and Health Science • Third Year of Preparatory School
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to describe examples of genetic technologies that have improved human health, including the production of the Golden Rice Project and the Human Genome Project.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- recall that a gene is a section of DNA that contains the information needed to produce a characteristic,
- state some problems associated with vitamin A deficiencies,
- describe how vitamin A deficiencies have been combated by the production of golden rice,
- state the aims and the outcomes of the Human Genome Project.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- the fact that humans require a healthy, balanced diet.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- the detailed process of the Human Genome Project,
- the role of vectors or enzymes in producing a genetically engineered organism.
