Lesson Plan: Weather Patterns

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to collect data about the weather, describe weather patterns, and make predictions.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • define weather,
  • define air temperature and pressure, wind speed and direction, precipitation, and humidity,
  • describe how scientists collect data on air temperature and pressure, wind speed and direction, precipitation, and humidity,
  • accurately read a thermometer to collect and compare data on air temperature,
  • explain how scientists gather data using weather balloons and satellites,
  • explain how scientists use data to identify weather patterns and make predictions.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • common weather conditions, for example, sunny, cloudy, windy, rainy, and snowy,
  • measuring temperature using a thermometer,
  • the changes of states in water.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • seasonal weather changes,
  • climate,
  • details of the water cycle and how clouds and precipitation form,
  • weather hazards.
