Lesson Plan: Synthetic Division
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to use synthetic division for dividing polynomials.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- understand and apply the synthetic division process to rewrite the quotient of two polynomials where the divisor is
- monic and linear,
- nonmonic and linear,
- nonlinear,
- use synthetic division to find an equivalent expression in a real-world problem involving the quotient of polynomials,
- understand the relationship between two polynomials and their quotient when the remainder term is zero.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- algebraic long division.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- dividing by a monomial,
- the remainder theorem,
- graphing polynomials.
