Lesson Plan: Liters
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to define volume, read volume measurements in liters on a labeled container, and estimate whether a container holds more than 1 liter, less than 1 liter, or about 1 liter.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- define the meaning of volume in relation to capacity,
- determine whether containers marked in liters are holding more than 1 liter, less than 1 liter, or about 1 liter,
- estimate whether unmarked containers will hold more than 1 liter, less than 1 liter, or about 1 liter,
- read volume measurements in liters on a container marked in liters.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- nonstandard units of volume and capacity,
- comparing measurements such as length and mass,
- estimation strategies,
- vertical number lines.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- milliliters,
- fluid ounces, quarts, and other nonmetric units,
- measurements other than volume and capacity.
