Lesson Plan: Order of Operations: Decimals Mathematics
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to evaluate numerical expressions involving decimals using the order of operations.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- understand and recall the correct order of operations, including that you add and subtract from left to right and multiply and divide from left to right,
- recall acronyms such as PEMDAS or BIDMAS and how they can be used to recall the order of operations,
- evaluate integer and decimal expressions involving the four operations addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division,
- evaluate integer and decimal expressions involving the four operations addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, along with parentheses and exponents,
- solve real-word problems involving integers and decimals using the order of operations.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- the four operations with integers and decimals,
- evaluating exponents,
- the use of the centered-dot notation for multiplication.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- evaluating algebraic expressions.
