Lesson Plan: Introduction to the Circulatory System

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to identify and describe the main parts of the circulatory system, understand its function, and describe the composition and function of blood.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • define and identify the function of the circulatory system,
  • identify and describe the functions of the heart, blood, and blood vessels,
  • label the parts of the circulatory system on a diagram,
  • describe and relate the organization of cells and tissues to the circulatory system using terms such as cells, tissues, organs, and organ system,
  • define and describe the function of blood,
  • describe the composition of blood,
  • describe the function of red and white blood cells, plasma, and platelets.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • the different systems of the body,
  • cells,
  • the lungs.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • the interaction between the heart and the lungs (blood flow from the heart to the lungs and vice versa),
  • the movement of specific nutrients other than oxygen in the blood,
  • specific structure of the heart,
  • the direction of blood flow through the heart,
  • arterioles and venules,
  • the different chambers in the heart,
  • specific details about blood vessels,
  • specific details about how blood flows through the chambers of the heart and the rest of the body.
