Lesson Plan: The Negative Mass Method Mathematics

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to find the center of gravity of a lamina that contains holes using the negative mass method.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • calculate the center of gravity of laminas that contain holes using the negative mass method,
  • solve applied problems involving the center of gravity of laminas containing holes,
  • calculate the center of gravity of a lamina where a part is cut and moved to a different position (including examples of corners folded over).

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • calculating the center of gravity of systems of particles,
  • calculating the center of gravity of laminas composed of various shapes,
  • solving center of gravity problems where a lamina is cut by partitioning (not using the negative mass method).

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • the center of gravity of 3D systems.
