Lesson Plan: Identifying Odd and Even Numbers: Skip Counting Mathematics

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to determine whether numbers within 100 are even or odd by skip counting and by looking at the ones digit.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • recognize that skip counting by twos results in all even numbers and no odd numbers,
  • count accurately by twos to determine if a number is even or odd,
  • identify a number as even or odd by looking at its ones digit.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • counting by twos,
  • using models to determine whether a number within 20 is even or odd,
  • numbers through 100.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • adding or subtracting odd and even numbers,
  • numbers greater than 100.
