Lesson Plan: Structural Isomerism Chemistry

This lesson plan includes the objectives and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to define a structural isomer and explain why structural isomers display different physical properties.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • define types of structural isomerism in order to identify chain, positional, and functional isomerism in different molecules,
  • deduce and name different possible molecules from a given molecular formula,
  • recall how changes in the shape of molecules can affect the physical properties of the organic substance.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • E–Z, cis-trans, or optical isomerism.
