Lesson Plan: Investigating Photosynthesis

This lesson plan includes the objectives and prerequisites of the lesson teaching students how to describe practical experiments that can be used to investigate the effect of limiting factors on the rate of photosynthesis.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • describe how the effects of different photosynthesis limiting factors can be investigated using pondweed in test tubes of water and algal balls in hydrogen carbonate indicator,
  • measure and calculate rates of photosynthesis,
  • use and apply the inverse square law.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • the effects of temperature, light intensity, carbon dioxide concentration, and the amount of chlorophyll on the rate of photosynthesis,
  • what is meant by the term limiting factor.
