Lesson Plan: Picture Graphs with Scales in 2, 5, or 10 Mathematics

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to read and draw pictographs where each picture represents 2, 5, or 10 to solve simple put-together, take-apart, and compare problems.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • read and interpret a pictograph with a scale of 2, 5, or 10,
  • solve put-together and take-apart problems about data in a pictograph,
  • explain the meaning of scale in a pictograph,
  • create a pictograph from a data table.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • reading pictographs where each picture represents 1.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • bar graphs.
