Lesson Plan: Relations and Functions Mathematics • 8th Grade
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to identify, represent, and recognize functions from schematic descriptions, arrow diagrams, and graphs.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- define a function,
- determine whether a relation is a function from a relation diagram, a table, and a set of ordered pairs,
- determine whether a relation is a function from its schematic descriptions or equation,
- determine equations that can be defined as functions,
- represent functions using diagrams, sets of ordered pairs, equations, and graphs,
- define and find a domain, a codomain, and a range of discrete functions (as sets),
- find unknowns given that a relation between two sets is a function.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- sets and set notation,
- Cartesian products,
- representing relations.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- polynomial functions,
- continuous functions.
