Lesson Plan: Magnets and Transportation Science

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to model and describe a floating magnet and explore the use of magnets to improve transportation.


Students will be able to

  • describe how to create a floating magnet,
  • explain why the magnet is floating using the key terms repel and magnetic field,
  • explain how a maglev train works,
  • describe the advantages and disadvantages of maglev trains,
  • explain how a hyperloop train works,
  • describe the advantages and disadvantages of hyperloop trains.


Students should already be familiar with

  • magnets,
  • magnetism,
  • different types of magnets.


Students will not cover

  • the specific types of magnets used in the maglev train and the hyperloop train.
