Lesson Plan: Laws of Deductive Reasoning

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to use the law of detachment and the law of syllogism to reach logical conclusions from given statements.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • analyze a given argument to determine whether it is based upon inductive or deductive reasoning,
  • use the law of detachment to reach logical conclusions from given statements and determine whether a given conclusion is valid,
  • test the validity of a given conclusion by using a Venn diagram,
  • use the law of syllogism to reach logical conclusions from given statements and determine whether a given conclusion is valid,
  • analyze a given argument to determine whether the conclusion is drawn using the law of detachment or law of syllogism.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • writing compound and conditional statements and determining their truth values,
  • finding a counterexample to disprove a conjecture,
  • Venn diagrams.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • truth tables.
