Lesson Plan: Modeling with Trigonometric Functions Mathematics

This lesson plan includes the objectives and prerequisites of the lesson teaching students how to solve problems that are modeled using trigonometric functions.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • solve problems that are modeled using trigonometric functions,
  • find maximum and minimum values of trigonometric functions that are modeling real-life situations,
  • substitute given values into a trigonometric function that is modeling a real-life situation to find unknowns,
  • simplify trigonometric functions of the form 𝑎𝑥±𝑏𝑥cossin, which are used to model real-life situations, to expressions involving the sine function or cosine function only.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • radians and degrees,
  • angle sum and difference formulae,
  • double- and half-angle formulae,
  • sketching trigonometric graphs,
  • inverse trigonometric functions,
  • simplifying expressions of the form 𝑎𝑥±𝑏𝑥cossin to expressions involving the sine function or cosine function only.
