Lesson Plan: Matching 3D Shapes to Nets Mathematics

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to identify the two–dimensional shapes on the faces of a three–dimensional shape and use them to recognize nets of simple three–dimensional shapes.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • understand that nets can be folded to form three–dimensional shapes,
  • match nets to their corresponding simple three–dimensional shapes,
  • match sets of two–dimensional shapes to make a net for a given three–dimensional shape.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • naming and identifying 3D shapes,
  • naming and identifying 2D shapes,
  • naming and identifying parts of 3D shapes, including faces, vertices, and edges.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • classifying and defining 3D shapes by their properties.
