Lesson Plan: The Structure of Atoms Chemistry • 7th Grade

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to describe the structure of the atom and what atoms are composed of and relate their size to everyday objects.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • relate the size and scale of atoms to objects in the physical world to explain the incredibly small size of atoms,
  • list the subatomic particles and their locations within the atom in order to describe the structure of the atom,
  • recall the relative masses and charges of the subatomic particles to identify where areas of mass and charge occur within the atom,
  • assess the combined charges of protons and electrons in order to determine the overall electrostatic charge of an atom.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • the particulate model of matter using simple spheres to represent atoms.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • subatomic particles other than protons, electrons, and neutrons.
