Lesson Plan: Sources and Transmission of Light
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to identify sources of light, classify materials by how much light they transmit, and describe how shadows form.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- recognize that light is a form of energy,
- identify sources of light,
- classify materials according to how much light they transmit,
- describe how shadows form,
- describe the link between the size of a shadow and the distance between the object and the light source.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- the names of some objects that give out light, for example, the Sun, flames, and flashlights,
- the fact that some objects let light through and some objects block light,
- what energy is.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- the fact that light travels in straight lines,
- applying the idea that light travels in straight lines to explain why shadows have the same shape as the objects that cast them,
- the electromagnetic spectrum and radiation,
- light waves.
