Lesson Plan: Reading Clocks to the Nearest Five Minutes Mathematics • 2nd Grade
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to tell the time in digits to the nearest five minutes.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- tell the time in 5-minute increments using an analog clock,
- tell the time in 5-minute increments using a digital clock,
- understand the position of the hour and minute hands on analog clocks.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- reading and writing the time to the nearest quarter of an hour on analog clocks,
- skip counting in fives up to 60.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- reading and writing time in words (e.g., “minutes to” or ”minutes past”),
- use of am and pm,
- the 24-hour clock.
