Lesson Plan: Maps and Data

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to use different types of maps to identify and compare Earth’s features.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • identify and describe the uses of different types of maps including physical maps, topographic maps, road maps, and political maps,
  • identify and interpret common features of maps including the scale, legend, compass rose, and symbols,
  • define latitude and longitude,
  • use maps to identify and compare Earth’s features,
  • compare the information given in different types of maps.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • what maps are and how they give information about Earth’s features.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • patterns in Earth’s surface features.
