Lesson Plan: Addition Reactions of Alkenes
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to define addition reactions and write equations for the addition of water, hydrogen, and halogens to alkenes.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- describe the reactions of alkenes with water (steam), hydrogen, and halogens to exemplify addition reactions,
- recall the chemical test for alkenes as an example of an addition reaction,
- describe the benefits of addition reactions in the production of chemicals useful to society.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- hydrocarbons and homologous series.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- addition polymerization or Markovnikov reactions.
