Lesson Plan: Converting Fractions to Decimals: Tenths and Hundredths Mathematics • 4th Grade

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to convert fractions to decimals by first rewriting the fraction to have a denominator of 10 or 100 and then writing it as a decimal.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • convert a proper fraction or a mixed number to a decimal when the denominator is 10 or 100,
  • write decimal numbers to represent halves and quarters,
  • convert a proper fraction or a mixed number to a decimal when the denominator is a factor of 10 or 100,
  • convert a proper fraction or a mixed number to a decimal when the denominator is a multiple of 10 or 100.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • multiplying or dividing by a one-digit number or by 10 to generate equivalent fractions.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • converting a proper fraction to a decimal when the denominator is 1,000.
