Lesson Plan: Separating Mixtures Science

This lesson plan includes the objectives and prerequisites of the lesson teaching students how to describe the separation of different mixtures using a range of different physical processes.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • identify mixtures of substances with different physical properties,
  • list and outline multiple separating techniques, including filtering, chromatography, evaporation, distillation, sieving, magnetism, freezing, melting, fractional distillation, decanting, and the uses of a separating funnel and a centrifuge,
  • choose the appropriate separation techniques to separate different mixtures.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • physical changes,
  • the difference between a mixture and pure substances.
