This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to find the probability of the difference of two events.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • understand, using Venn diagrams, the difference between two events, denoted 𝐴𝐵,
  • understand the difference rules for probability:
    • 𝑃(𝐴𝐵)=𝑃(𝐴)𝑃(𝐴𝐵),
    • 𝑃(𝐵𝐴)=𝑃(𝐵)𝑃(𝐴𝐵),
  • use the difference rule and other rules for operations on events to calculate probabilities involving the difference between two events (including their complement),
  • use the difference rule along with other operations on events to solve problems in context, including finding the probability that only one or the other of two events occurs.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • probability of simple events,
  • dealing with fractions and percentages,
  • operations on events such as union and intersection,
  • the probability of complementary events.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • conditional probability,
  • Bayes’s theorem.
