Lesson Plan: Perimeter of a Composite Figure Mathematics

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to find the perimeter and area of a composite figure composed of squares and rectangles.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • calculate missing side lengths on diagrams of composite figures,
  • calculate the perimeter of composite figures by summing the side lengths,
  • calculate the area of composite figures by dividing them into squares or rectangles.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • calculating the perimeter and areas of squares and rectangles,
  • converting between metric units,
  • adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing whole numbers within 1,000.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • composite figures involving shapes other than squares and rectangles,
  • composite figures in which the side lengths are noninteger values.
