Lesson Plan: Experimental Probability

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to calculate an experimental probability using data from a probability experiment, a survey, or a sample and use it to estimate the expected number of times an event will occur.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • define a probability experiment,
  • calculate the experimental probability of an event based on data from a past experiment, a survey, or a sample,
  • use an experimental probability to estimate the expected number of times an event can occur.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • basic probability language such as the terms certain, likely, and impossible,
  • using fractions to describe probabilities,
  • theoretical probabilities.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • compound probabilities,
  • writing probabilities as decimals.
