Lesson Plan: Partial Fractions: Improper Fractions

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to perform partial fractions on improper algebraic fractions.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • perform partial fractions on improper algebraic fractions by first using algebraic division with a quadratic divisor with nonrepeated linear factors,
  • perform partial fractions on improper algebraic fractions by first using algebraic division with a quadratic divisor with repeated linear factors.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • adding or subtracting rational functions,
  • factoring polynomial expressions,
  • partial fractions when the denominator contains linear factors,
  • algebraic (polynomial) division.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • synthetic division,
  • polynomial divisions by cubic or higher polynomials,
  • partial fraction problems that do not involve algebraic divisions.
