This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to describe various reactions of alcohols and predict what products are formed.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • describe the reactants, catalysts, and reaction conditions for the dehydration of alcohols to form alkenes,
  • describe the reactants, catalysts, and reaction conditions for the reaction of alcohols with hydrogen halides,
  • describe the reactants, catalysts, and reaction conditions for the reaction of alcohols with sodium metal,
  • predict the products of the above reactions given the reactants, or vice versa,
  • describe the reactants, catalysts, and reaction conditions for the oxidation of alcohols,
  • predict the different products from the oxidation of primary, secondary, and tertiary alcohols.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • properties of alcohols,
  • homologous series.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • mechanisms for any of the reactions,
  • synthesis of esters,
  • practical descriptions of performing the reactions experimentally.
