Lesson Plan: Adding and Subtracting Decimals Mathematics • 6th Grade
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to add and subtract multidigit decimals.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- recognize that adding trailing zeros to a decimal value (to the right of both the decimal point and all other digits) does not change its value,
- add multidigit decimals with the same number of decimal places,
- add multidigit decimals with different numbers of decimal places,
- subtract multidigit decimals with the same number of decimal places,
- subtract multidigit decimals with different numbers of decimal places,
- solve word problems involving the addition and subtraction of multidigit decimals.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- the place value of decimals with up to four decimal places,
- the addition and subtraction of integers.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- adding or subtracting negative decimals,
- the multiplication or division of decimals.
