Lesson Plan: Fertilizers Chemistry
This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to describe the production of fertilizers in laboratories and on an industrial scale.
Objectives
Students will be able to
- explain that fertilizers may contain nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium compounds,
- detail the chemical reactions that produce salts used as fertilizers,
- describe the industrial production of fertilizers and compare it with the laboratory synthesis of the same chemicals.
Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
- the production of ammonia via the Haber process,
- raw materials being obtained from ore,
- neutralization reactions.
Exclusions
Students will not cover
- details of ammonia production via the Haber process.
