This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to multiply and divide algebraic fractions.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • multiply algebraic fractions, expressing an answer in its simplest form,
  • divide algebraic fractions, expressing an answer in its simplest form.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • factorizing quadratic equations,
  • canceling binomial factors in the numerator and denominator of algebraic fractions,
  • manipulating equations with more than one variable.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • function notation,
  • algebraic expressions with powers larger than 2 in the numerator or denominator,
  • factoring cubic equations (where polynomial long division may be required),
  • adding and subtracting algebraic fractions.
