Lesson Plan: Writing Two-Step Rules Mathematics

This lesson plan includes the objectives, prerequisites, and exclusions of the lesson teaching students how to write and interpret two-step expressions where the unknown is either a symbol or a letter.

Objectives

Students will be able to

  • identify expressions with two operations,
  • write two-step algebraic expressions with a symbol or a letter,
  • interpret two-step expressions,
  • convert between algebraic expressions and verbal expressions with two steps.

Prerequisites

Students should already be familiar with

  • the four operations on whole numbers,
  • interpreting word problems,
  • writing and evaluating numerical expressions.

Exclusions

Students will not cover

  • expressions with brackets,
  • expressions with exponents,
  • algebraic equations.
